Never Only

Mother Nature has spent millennia learning from the other life on Earth and mourning the loneliness of mass extinctions. Determined to avoid another, she enlists a therapist to help her evaluate Humanity’s intentions, and to decide whether she will need to sacrifice one species to save the rest.

Written by a career habitat and wildlife biologist, Never Only asks how Mother Nature might feel about our current reality and what she might be inclined to do about it. It’s a wild ride, full of humor, poignancy, and the highest stakes imaginable.

Laurie Fairchild earned a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from the University of Wyoming and a master’s in Water Resources Science from the University of Minnesota.

She began her career in Alaska as a biological technician during the Exxon Valdez oil spill, then spent several summers conducting seabird productivity work on the Pribilof Islands in the Bering Sea. She went on to work in a range of positions with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, retiring in 2019 as a habitat and wildlife biologist working with landowners in Minnesota. Never Only is her debut novel.
